Fierce Love: Better Not Make This Mom Angry

Posted by: Gwen Stewart in ,

The last monster to run wild through Bong Joon-ho’s imagination was an enormous creature from the watery deep. A different menace storms through “Mother,” the fourth feature from this sensationally talented South Korean filmmaker, though she too seems to spring from unfathomable depths. Unlike the beast in “The Host” — a catastrophic byproduct of the American military — the monster in “Mother” doesn’t come with much of a backstory, which suggests that she is a primal force, in other words, a natural.
She is and she isn’t as Mr. Bong reveals through a kinked narrative and a monumental, ferocious performance by Kim Hye-ja as the title character. Written by Mr. Bong, sharing credit with Park Eun-kyo, “Mother” opens as a love story that turns into a crime story before fusing into something of a criminal love story. Nothing is really certain here, even the film’s genre, and little is explained, even when the characters fill in the blanks. Though richly and believably drawn, Mr. Bong’s characters are often opaque and mysterious, given to sudden rages, behavioral blurts and hiccups of weird humor. But it’s this very mystery that can make them feel terribly real.

None are truer, more disturbingly persuasive than Mother, who lives with her 27-year-old son, Do-joon (Won Bin), in cramped quarters adjoining her tiny apothecary. Beautiful and strangely childlike, Do-joon doesn’t seem right in the head: he’s forgetful, seemingly naïve, perhaps retarded. (When he tries to remember something, he violently massages both sides of his head in an exercise that Mother, without apparent irony, calls “the temple of doom.”) But if he runs a little slow, Mother runs exceedingly fast, as you see shortly after the movie opens when, while playing with a dog one bright day, Do-joon puts himself in the path of an oncoming BMW, which leaves him dazed if not particularly more addled.

You watch the accident unfold alongside Mother, who busily chops herbs with a big blade in her darkened shop while casting worried glances at Do-joon as he goofs off across the street. From her vantage point, he looks as centered within the shop’s front door as a little prince inside a framed portrait. The dim interior and bright exterior only accentuate his body — the daylight functions as a kind of floodlight — which puts into visual terms the idea that he is the only thing that Mother really sees. Mr. Bong may like narrative detours, stories filled with more wrong turns than a maze, but he’s a born filmmaker whose images — the spilled water that foreshadows spilled blood — tell more than you might initially grasp.

He’s also a filmmaker who finds great, unsettling dark comedy in violence, and once again the blood does run, if somewhat less generously than in “The Host” and his often brilliant “Memories of Murder.” Although Do-joon seems to recover from his accident, the event sets off a chain of increasingly violent incidents that culminate in the murder of a local schoolgirl, Ah-jung (Moon Hee-ra), whose body is found slumped over a roof wall in the village, positioned, one character says, like “laundry.” Do-joon is summarily arrested for the death after an incriminating golf ball is found at the scene. Mad with grief, Mother sets off to clear him and begins furiously rooting around the village in search of the killer.

The hard-pounding heart of “Mother,” Ms. Kim is a wonderment. Perched on the knife edge between tragedy and comedy, her delivery gives the narrative — which tends to drift, sometimes beguilingly, sometimes less so — much of its momentum. At times it feels as if Ms. Kim is actually willing it, or perhaps Mr. Bong, forward. Yet while Mother can seem like a caricature of monstrous maternity (“You and I are one,” she insists to the jailed Do-joon) the performance is enormously subtle, filled with shades of gray that emerge in tandem with the unwinding investigation. There are several crimes in “Mother,” and while none can be justified, Mr. Bong works hard to make sure none are easily condemned.

“Mother” is a curious film, alternately dazzling and frustrating. Mr. Bong’s virtues as a filmmaker, including his snaking storytelling and refusal to overexplain actions and behaviors, can here feel like evasions or indulgences rather than fully thought-out choices. There’s a vagueness to the film that doesn’t feel organic — as if, having created a powerhouse central character, he didn’t exactly know what to do with her. That said, his visual style and the way he mixes eccentric types with the more banal, like a chemist preparing a combustible formula, are often sublime, as is Ms. Kim’s turn as the mother of all nightmarish mothers, a dreadful manifestation of a love so consuming it all but swallows the world.

American Idol: New Season, New Twist, all in the New Year

Posted by: Gwen Stewart in , ,

It’s one of the best reality shows ever to hit TV setting the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Jenifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry to fame. They were idols, and as a new year begins so does the journey to look for the answers in the most asked question: who will become the next American Idol.

Last season was full of surprises; the 8th season went out with a bang as firstly there’s a new judge, secondly there are thirteen and not twelve finalist, thirdly there was a saving grace option for an eliminated finalist and fourthly the underdog, Kris Allen won the title. It was something worth remembering. So, as the New Year kicks in people are looking forward to new twist and new vibes that may come around.

Speaking of new things, public records search shows concerns from fans regarding Paula Abdul leaving American Idol. There is certainly issues regarding her raise and this is still unanswered. However people who have been there to see American Idol feel the loss if ever everybody’s sweet and favorite judge would not be staying around: It’s definitely not the same….

Definitely not going to be the same—it has been confirmed that the beloved Paula Abdul will not be returning to take on the fourth judge’s seat. Many are crying out for Paula to return however with her quitting, Fox has already made plans on who will take over her position. It’s definitely a thrill as someone from a different background was announced to take her place: Ellen DeGeneres who has been fan of the Idol ever since day one said on her talk show how she plans to give out her part as the people’s voice. She definitely doesn’t have formal training in such yet is a lover of tunes so she wishes to assess the contestant through how viewers’ see fit like going for a records search in the music store. But before Ellen goes for the seat as an Idol judge, guest judges will first take the place for the auditions starting off with Victoria Beckham who will be judging for one week.

As Abdul leaves the Idol, Kara DioGuardi, who has confirmed her return in the Idol judge seat, may be taking a few cold shoulders from the show’s fans. Let’s face it, feeling bitter with Paula’s decision to leave gives them reason to feel bad that Kara will be staying instead. More on the judges: news hit with yet another judge planning to leave the show after this season: Simon Cowell. The judge everybody loves to hate will be giving up his seat after the upcoming 9th season. This was brought about by his wish to concentrate more on bringing the UK hit talent show, X Factor, to the US next year. It can be well noted that this talent show launched one of today’s talented singers, Leona Lewis, who won the competition during 2006. At present background check on Leona shows her latest achievements since her win in the said competition: getting nominated for the Grammy Award and recently singin the theme song I see You for James Cameron’s Avatar.

American Idol’s 9th season will be airing this January 12, 2010 at 8:00 am and whether there have been changes the fans may or may not like this show is still something worth watching. It’s time for the Idol phenomena to start taking the world to the next level as another instant people search happen with ultimate star quality.

It's also a fine example of storytelling prowess within its medium, combining gameplay and narrative so slickly and beautifully that it's impossible to extricate one from the other. It's likely you will emerge awestruck from your first play-through, wishing the experience would continue yet nonetheless satisfied with its conclusion. It's difficult not to sound hyperbolic when discussing MGS4 because every part of its design seemingly fulfills its vision, without compromise. There is no halfway.

Grand Theft Auto IV - A superb single-player story mode and online support for up to 16 players make this the best Grand Theft Auto game yet. Tomb Raider Underworld - Tomb Raider Underworld will satisfy fans of Lara's previous adventures, but it does little to address previous games' problems. With excellent mix of outdoor, underground, and underwater locations, Lara's new moves add to her existing abilities, some excellent level and puzzle design. Tomb Raider Underworld is Crystal Dynamics' third game in as many years, and the high work rate is starting to show. Lara may have plenty of new moves at her disposal, but little has been done to address the many camera and clipping issues still present. Tomb Raider Underworld offers an enticing new adventure, but if you're a fan of the series you'll find that Lara is starting to show her age.

Resident Evil 5 - Resident Evil 5 is a fun and frantic evolution of RE4's breakthrough gameplay and the series' horror themes. Assassins Creed - Assassin's Creed II is what you'd want an action sequel to be: bigger, better, and more beautiful. With a Huge, beautifully realized world to explore, Ezio is a terrific new character; tombs put a spotlight on the excellent and enjoyable platforming, a greater variety of missions, weapons, and stealth techniques than in the original and incredible production values.

"Nothing is true; everything is permitted."

We learned this adage in the original Assassin's Creed, and Assassin's Creed II carries on the tradition beautifully, inspiring you to rethink the conspiracy at the heart of the series--and to reconsider what you should expect from a sequel. The franchise's second console outing is an impressive piece of work. Developer Ubisoft Montreal has addressed almost all of Assassin's Creed's flaws by filling its follow-up with fresh and enjoyable mission types and layering on new and mostly excellent features, while still retaining the joy of movement and atmospheric wonder that characterized the original. These enhancements range from the subtle (you can swim now) to the game-changing (there's an economy), but aside from a few small missteps, every tweak makes for a more enjoyable, more engaging adventure. The cohesive story and a terrific new character will draw you in, and you aren't apt to forget the memorable and explosive ending that will have you eager for the third installment.

Final Fantasy XIII - Final Fantasy XIII is one of the most highly anticipated titles for 2009. Players roam the realms of Pulse, a wild and overgrown planet, and Cocoon, a heavenly world floating in the sky above. Also Square Enix is planning to add online features to the title. Previously a PS3 exclusive, the game is also coming to the Xbox 360.

In keeping with the Elder Scrolls tradition, players will have the option to experience the main quest at their own pace, and there will be plenty of opportunities to explore the vast world and make your own way. Numerous factions can be joined, such as the thieves or mages guilds, and each contains its own complete storyline and the chance to rise to the head of the faction and reap further rewards.Oblivion features a groundbreaking new AI system, called Radiant AI, which gives non-player characters (NPCs) the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. They'll decide where to eat or who to talk to and what they'll say. They'll sleep, go to church, and even steal items, all based on their individual characteristics. Chicago Bulls let Jarrett Jack to ties his shoes during game play

Posted by: Gwen Stewart in , , , ,

It was exclusive a some days ago that we were questioning the effort level of the Toronto Raptors, and wondering if it strength be time for the team's head coach to start worrying about his job security. But after the Raptors went into Chicago and crushed the Bulls on Saturday, it seems that, at least for the moment, they've left their troubles behind.

The same can't be said, however, for the team Toronto played against.

I ingest the catchword \"played against\" very loosely here, because the Bulls barely played this one at all. Toronto jumped on them from the very start, and ran out to a 37-16 prototypal quarter lead, on the way to a 110-78 final score.

(And no, the game wasn't modify that close, but thanks for asking.)

There are going to be nights when one team has it and the other team doesn't; blowouts happen to everyone once in a while, modify the league's elite. But the Bulls have now lost seven of their last eight games (apologies, Pistons), and have done so by an average of almost 18 points each.

Chicago wasn't supposed to be this bad, and when teams intend consistently blasted like this, at some point it comes down to effort, which -- at least in part -- falls on the shoulders of the head coach. And this play from Saturday night's debacle shows that there is something seriously lacking with the Bulls' desire to compete.

Here we have Jarrett Jack of the Raptors, receiving a pass out beyond the top of the circle. He notices his shoe is untied. But instead of calling timeout or expiration to a teammate while he takes care of the situation, Jack calmly holds the ball, and leans down to tie his shoe -- DURING LIVE GAME ACTION! -- and all the Bulls do is stand there and watch.

You can hear how incredulous the Toronto announcers are, because this was, quite honestly, completely ridiculous. Yes, it was a 27-point game as the third quarter clock was winding down, and sure, there's something to be said for good sportsmanship. But if you're the Bulls, you simply can't allow this to happen.

Just as we questioned whether or not Jay Triano would remain employed as the head coach of the Raptors a some days ago, you can't help but astonishment the same thing about Vinnie Del Negro when you see plays like this.

When the team arrives in Missouri, Castiel sees Reapers everywhere. He tries to find out why they are there and is captured by Lucifer, who tries to convince Castiel to join him, while showing that his own temporary vessel Nick, overpowered by Lucifer's presence inside him, is dying. Meg arrives and sends hellhounds after the brothers and the Harvelles, and while trying to help Dean, Jo is fatally wounded. While taking shelter in a hardware store, Dean calls Bobby, who tells him the Reapers are in town because they are waiting for their boss to show: the angel of Death, one of the Four Horsemen. Realizing she won't recover from her wound, Jo suggests they build a bomb to blow up the hellhounds, using her as bait to lure the demonic dogs.

Ellen volunteers to stay behind, too, so she can let the hellhounds in and set off the bomb while Dean and Sam escape. After a tearful goodbye with Dean, Jo dies in Ellen's arms, who then blows up the building, killing herself and the hellhounds. The brothers find Lucifer in the middle of summoning Death, and Dean shoots Lucifer with the Colt. However, he is healed instantly and reveals that there are only five beings the Colt can't kill—and he happens to be one of them. Lucifer sacrifices several demons to summon Death, stating that "they're just demons". Meanwhile, Castiel manages to free himself from his trap and takes the brothers to Bobby's.
